Mo Aborig and Wesley Cain propelled K-W United to a 2-1 victory over the Dayton Dutch Lions on Wednesday evening. The win secures second-place in the Great Lakes Division, and a spot in the Professional Development League playoffs with an overall record of 9-4-1.
"It felt great that we got the win," Cain said after the game. "I felt that we have a lot to improve on today."
K-W United came into this game needing three points to stand a chance to capture first place in the division, and they came out of the gate running. Cain had his first opportunity of the night in the 18th minute when he came in on Dayton goalkeeper Michael Yantz, but Yantz swiftly pushed it aside.
K-W United's offence wasn't held back for too long, as in the 22nd minute, Mo Aborig capitalized on a chance that fooled Yantz to put the black and blue up by a goal midway through the first half. It was Aborig's fourth goal of the season, and a big one, to take the early lead. Cain added to that lead seven minutes later with a goal of his own to provide some cushion, extending the lead to two. Dayton found the scoresheet in the 38th minute to cut the lead in half, but K-W United held onto the lead coming into halftime.
K-W United dominated most of the second half, and came close to adding to the lead and sealing the deal. Two shots by Adam Polakiewicz, one in the 71st minute and another in the 76th minute both sailed just wide of the net, with one flying above the crossbar, and the other to the side. Dayton pushed hard, but the K-W United defence remained stout, securing the victory.
With the Michigan Bucks beating Chicago FC United 4-1 on Wednesday evening, K-W United finishes in second and will have an all-Canadian conference semifinal with the Thunder Bay Chill. The Chill, who claimed first place in the Heartland Division, finished the season with a 9-3-2 record and 29 points. Cain said that the game against Dayton was the perfect game to get ready for the challenge ahead, and gave them a chance to look deep into the team to see who can make it when it comes to the big games.
"It's going to be a long process for us getting ready, but I think we're all buzzing and ready to get it started," he said. "I think we can go pretty far in the playoffs."
KW United faces Thunder Bay Chill at 5:00 pm on Friday July 21st for the Central Conference semi final in Pontiac Michigan. Michigan Bucks and Des Moines Menace meet in the second game at 7:30 pm. The winners of these games then meet on Saturday.
