K-W United FC forward Jannik Löbe was the hero in K-W’s 1-0 victory against the Derby City Rovers on Monday evening. His third goal of the season improved K-W United’s overall record to 7-1-0, maintaining their first place position in the Great Lakes Division.
The game remained deadlocked all through the first half, as both teams traded chances. K-W United took the first shot with a dagger from midfielder Ken Krolicki that was blocked by Derby City goalkeeper Chandler Gaunce. Löbe frequently searched for the scoresheet, taking four shots over 90 minutes of playing time. Both teams played super aggressively, with Löbe getting multiple opportunities to get K-W United on the scoreboard first, including a free kick in the 18th minute when he was pulled down. K-W was granted another free kick, but it sailed just wide of the Rovers net. Neither of the teams could capitalize on any opportunities or swing momentum in their favour.
Although most of the second half remained very much like the first – a competitive and aggressive match, K-W United was finally rewarded for their perseverance. In the 84th minute, Löbe received a pass from midfielder Munir Saleh and made no mistake in finding the back of the net, giving K-W United a 1-0 lead. Playing strong defence, K-W United kept the Rovers at bay, away from K-W goalkeeper Scott Levene to seal the victory. The win started the road trip on a strong note and continued the momentum they built while at home, having only suffered a loss back in the first week against the Michigan Bucks.
Levene was stout in his first start this season with the black and blue. Facing the threat of four shots, Levene picked up his first win and shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Gaunce finished the game with a 0.667 save percentage, two saves and one goals against. Currently, the Rovers sit in sixth place with a 1-6-1 overall record, searching for their second win that could give them the required momentum to finish the season off strong.
Next, K-W United continues their road trip as they visit the Cincinnati Dutch Lions. Kickoff is on Wednesday June 21 at 7p.m. at Northern Kentucky University.
